Sleep Apnea

We Smile Dentistry offers the latest treatments and solutions for obstructive sleep apnea

When London, Ontario area patients are asked about sleeping disorders, they may not be familiar with all the different types known. While insomnia and snoring are two things people think of most, they are not the only problematic conditions that can occur. Millions of Canadians go undiagnosed for a condition known as obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, and may not be aware of the latest treatments and solutions to combat it.

What are the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea?

The most common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea include:

  • Chronic snoring
  • Morning headaches or migraines
  • Dry throat upon waking
  • Gasping for air while sleeping
  • Periods of no breathing while sleeping
  • Poor memory and concentration
  • Daytime fatigue

Some of these symptoms are just bothersome for patients, while others are more serious, such as daytime fatigue that can impact someone who may be driving to and from work each day. The common signs of this condition often occur while one is sleeping, which is why many people go undiagnosed.

With a proper diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea, patients can then seek assistance in treating it.

What treatment options are available for OSA?

Most cases of obstructive sleep apnea are effectively addressed with treatments such as CPAP therapy. A CPAP is a machine that keeps the airways open, though it requires patients to use a device and wear a face mask while they rest. This can be uncomfortable and make it hard to sleep, in and of itself. Instead of using a CPAP device, some patients turn to their local dentist to learn about the latest treatments for sleep apnea. Our team at We Smile Dentistry may recommend oral appliance therapy, which uses a specialized mouthguard worn overnight to reduce or even eliminate obstructive sleep apnea and improve one’s quality of life.

In addition, there are future treatments that show great promise, including low-energy laser therapies. These will likely be available in mid to late 2021 and will be offered at our practice as an alternative to an oral appliance for patients who qualify.
