Early treatment of dental damage with laser cavity detection

Committed to investing in and mastering the newest technologies, We Smile Dentistry uses sophisticated tools to detect conditions early. The sooner Dr. Giulio Spagnuolo identifies problems, the better. Dental laser cavity detection at our London, Ontario office identifies structural weaknesses and signs of enamel erosion that otherwise might go undetected with traditional x-rays and visual inspection. Prompt intervention starts with early detection and is associated with efficient and non-traumatic treatment that preserves maximum tooth structure.

The power of proactive care

The first stage of tooth decay involves the loss of minerals within the enamel. Stronger than skeletal bone, the enamel is a resilient protective covering. But it is not impervious to repeated acid attacks caused by oral bacteria and by starches and sugars in the foods and drinks that we consume. White spots may appear in areas of demineralization. At this point, enamel may be remineralized with oral care products such as fluoride toothpaste and fluoride-containing applicator trays. Without treatment, more minerals are lost. White spots may appear brownish in colour. Eventually, the enamel weakens so much that small holes or cavities form. We may recommend dental sealants to protect the tooth from further damage or small fillings to repair cavities.

Untreated cavities become larger, and tooth decay may progress to damage the softer dentin layer underneath. Eventually, without treatment, decay affects the inner structure of the tooth. Deeper decay requires root canal therapy. Not all teeth can be saved with root canal treatment; the natural tooth may be too far gone to be preserved. Extractions and replacement teeth are the last resort treatment to restore oral health and healthy functionality and appearance.

Laser cavity detection

Laser-assisted cavities detection is based on the principle that healthy tooth material reflects light differently than tooth structure damaged by decay. Accordingly, light passes through healthy teeth effortlessly. Conversely, light does not penetrate cavities as easily. By using laser light, Dr. Spagnuolo can clearly see those areas of the teeth that are damaged due to how the tooth structure responds to light precisely directed towards it.

The process of laser cavity detection is:

  • Fast
  • Easy
  • Non-invasive
  • Comfortable

The pen-like laser device generates a beam of light directed toward the chewing surfaces of the teeth. Using this instrument, we discreetly scan the teeth. Information about the tooth’s structure, such as its density, is collected. The risk of decay is calculated on these findings. Furthermore, your dentist pinpoints the compromised areas of the tooth based on information rendered by these scans. Weakened areas may be resolved promptly with fluoride and hygiene modifications. In turn, the decay process is prevented, and the cavity is not allowed to form in the first place. Alternately, an existing cavity may be detected and treated before it progresses to dentin decay that requires more extensive restorative treatment. The latter damage may be treated conservatively with sealants or simple fillings.

Progressive conditions, such as tooth decay, are often silent in their early stages. Trust early detection to We Smile Dentistry and our skill with using sophisticated technologies. Call (226) 605-0042 to schedule your appointment at the London, ON office.
