Quality, fear-free dental care evolves with children’s needs

Smiles are forever. And those stunning, healthy smiles are ideally made in early childhood. We Smile Dentistry abides by the Canadian Dental Association recommendations; the first visit to our office should take place within six months of the first tooth surfacing above the gumline or by no later than the child’s first birthday. Children’s dental care in London, Ontario, at the office of Dr. Giulio Spagnuolo, is convenient, stress-free, and comfortable. We have minimized or eliminated many of the features that inspire dread of the dentist’s visit among young and older patients alike. We take great care to create an atmosphere and experience that is gentle and friendly, and we use technologies like lasers to avoid the clinical sounds, smells, and sensations that can be upsetting for many patients. Knowing this, if it’s been a while since you or your child have seen the dentist, there is no time like the present to acquaint yourself with modern dentistry that is designed to put you and your family at ease.

Friendly care, at every life stage

Every child is different. But, generally, you’ll see the lower and upper front teeth erupt between the ages of 6 to 12 months. The last primary or baby teeth to form in the gums are generally the upper back teeth (second molars), between the ages of 25 to 33 months.  During this time, the initial visits to our office are focused on evaluating these baby teeth and the gums and other oral structures. It’s important for our team to detect and intervene with problems early before they have an adverse effect on your child’s oral and overall development.

We’ll discuss techniques and products to clean small mouths if problems are detected during these early visits. While temporary, baby teeth are quite important. They serve as “placeholders” for the adult or permanent teeth that emerge through the gums, usually at around the age of six or seven.

The first adult teeth to erupt are at the back of the mouth, right behind the last baby teeth. Before these six-year molars present themselves, we’ll discuss ways to protect them with you and your child. Dental sealants are protective coverings that are applied to the surfaces of hard-to-reach, decay-prone back teeth. When applied by Dr. Spagnuolo, sealants keep out food debris and bacteria that tend to get caught in each molar’s grooved and uneven surface. Baby teeth continue to fall out and make way for adult ones until around the age of 12. The last adult tooth to erupt (if they erupt at all) are the third molars or “wisdom teeth.” Your child will never “graduate” out of our practice. The partnership that we’ve built with your child will continue to grow into adulthood. It is our pleasure to treat the children of these children for generations to come.

There are many options to keep your child smiling as their needs evolve, from sealants and fluoride treatments in kid-friendly flavours to sports guards and orthodontic appliances. Call (226) 605-0042 to
